Forests can be scary places, especially at night when it gets dark and foggy.

You start to hear the eerie sounds of the forest creatures waking up.

Some many old tales and myths have formed over several years that explain the stories of these haunted forests. Let’s look at some of the most haunted forests in the world and just what makes them so scary.

1. Isla de las Munecas

The “Island of the Dolls” is in Xochimilco just outside of Mexico City. The trees in the forest are hung with baby dolls that seem to come alive at night. According to legend, the island’s caretaker found a mysteriously drowned girl and hung up her doll as a memoir of the girl’s lost soul. The caretaker himself was found drowned in the exact same spot several years later.

2. Black Forest

The Black Forest in Germany is where many of the scary tales by the Brothers Grimm were set. Werewolves, headless horsemen, necromancers, and phantom kings are some of the horrors that lurk in this haunted forest.

3. Aokigahara

The “Sea of Trees” in Japan is one of the most haunted forests in the world. Compasses don’t work in the forest because of iron deposits underground, and so people always get lost on their paths. Since the 1950s, over 500 people have committed suicide in the forest, and their screams can be heard in the night.

4. Dow Hill Forest

This forest in India surrounds the Dow Hill Victoria Boys’ School and is home to the haunted hill station where so much paranormal activity has been recorded. A path in the forest has been called the “death road,” where the ghost of a headless boy wanders. The school remains closed from December to March, and the footsteps of the dead can be heard down the empty halls.

5. Hoia-Baciu

When it comes to haunted forests, Hoia-Baciu in Romania has been infamous for over half a century. The forest has a clearing that the townsfolk say is a portal to an evil world. Whoever goes through the portal can never return back to this world. The forest has come to be known as “the Bermuda Triangle of Transylvania.”

6. Wychwood Forest

This forest in England is haunted by Amy Robsart, the wife of the Earl of Leicester. Amy died of a broken neck in the year 1560 and appeared as a ghost to confront her husband while he hunted in the forest. He died just ten days after seeing her ghost, and it is said that anybody else who sees her will meet the same fate.

7. Elfin Forest

As far as haunted forests go, the Elfin Forest in California has all the mythical creatures and monsters to go with it. The forest was home to the Romani people in the 19th century, but the townspeople drove them away and killed whoever remained. The Romani people took their revenge by cursing the forest.

8. Dering Woods

Dering Woods is in England is also known as “the Screaming Woods” because of the loud screams and shrieks that can be heard in the woods late at night or on foggy days. The screams are said to belong to a highwayman who was killed in the woods in the 18th century by the townspeople. Some say that the screams are from the 20 people who died in a massacre in 1948 and whose bodies were found the next morning. Autopsies could not determine the cause of death of these 20 people.

9. Pokaini Forest

This forest in Latvia is one of the haunted forests home to pagan rituals and a gateway to a parallel universe. The forest also has mysterious rocks that are covered in moss and move randomly along the forest floor. Many people have been reported to fall ill or die after leaving the forest, and locals warn travelers that taking anything from the forest, even a small rock, will bring evil their way.

10. Yawata no Yabushirazu

This bamboo forest in Japan is one of the most haunted places in the country. The locals believe that anyone who enters the forest is spirited away to some other realm and can never return. The locals take this belief so seriously that the forest is surrounded by a huge fence so that nobody steps a foot inside.
