Charming for its sized and loved for its outgoing temperament, the Chihuahua not only makes an endearing companion, but also a great competing dog with lots of agility and obedience. Here’s what you need to know about Chihuahuas.

History

Although their origins are unclear, Chihuahuas are believed to descend from an ancient Mexican breed. This breed, called the Techichi, were living among the Toltec civilization, before the Aztec conquered them and took the Techichis with them. They believed the breed had mystic powers, abilities to see the future, heal the sick and guide souls of the dead to the underworld. However, the Chihuahuas from today were discovered in the 1850’s in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, where their name inspiration comes from. Their popularity rose in the 1930s and 1940s when Xavier Cugat, a famous Spanish bandleader, adopted one. Now, the Chihuahua is one of the most popular breeds registered by the American Kennel Club (AKC).

Personality

Despite their small size, Chihuahuas are known for their confidence. They also make excellent watchdogs because of their alert nature and suspicion of strangers. Chihuahuas might be timid if not socialized at a young age, but they usually like companionship, affection and are willing to meet new friends or people. Chihuahuas are usually easy to train, but their stubbornness can sometimes get in the way. Nevertheless, they’re a very energetic, comical and entertaining breed.

Health

As one of the healthiest breeds, Chihuahuas don’t have major health problems. However, the top health concern about them is generally due to their small size. Young Chihuahuas, thus, might be prone to develop Hypoglycemia, which is the result of burning off more energy than they’re consuming. Their small stomach and the fact that most Chihuahuas are picky eaters explain this issue. Noticeable signs of Hypoglycemia include trouble walking, glassy eyes, limpness or stiffness. It is extremely important to treat it as soon as possible as it can lead to fatal results.

Care

Chihuahuas might be small, but they still need a good amount of exercise and training because they have a lot of energy. But as much as they like going outside and being active, Chihuahuas are not made to live outdoors as they are very sensitive to the temperatures. Being brushed weekly is also important; Chihuahuas may shed small amounts of hair year round but they shed more heavily around spring and fall. With regular brushing, Chihuahuas shouldn’t need to be bathed more than once every month or two.

Feeding

Chihuahuas have small and delicate stomachs. What they eat and their feedings should be planned according to their height and weight. The main ingredient to look for in their food should be meat, and there should be little, if any, grain.
